Introduction
In the conclusion to his dissertation on Ellen G. White, Roy Graham noted that Ellen G. White’s “role and position in Seventh-day Adventism is still central. The intrinsic quality of her work is still evident both in what was accomplished during her lifetime, and in the direction to which she pointed her denomination through her writings. Her concern was to see the development of a conservative, but progressive, non-sectarian, Christian movement which would offer an alternative ecumenical concept—a reconciled people in an international body, united in purpose and service for their world. Their motivation was to be God’s love manifested in Christ and ultimately demonstrated in the parousia and eschaton. Such an eschatology would be their raison d’etre and their universal banner.”—Graham, Ellen White: Co-Founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (New York: Peter Lang Publishing Inc., 1985), pp. 429, 430. This final lesson is a good time to reflect on Ellen G. White’s central role and position in the church and how each member relates to her work.
As you see and experience the benefits of the gift of prophecy in Scripture, prepare your class to discuss the blessings of the postbiblical prophetic gift, as manifested in Ellen G. White.
Part II: Commentary
Part II: Commentary
- Prophecy in Scripture exalts Christ and leads us deeper into the Bible.
Christ made it clear to His disciples that the Old Testament testifies to Him: “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (, ESV; see also ). Old Testament prophecy leads us to Christ in several ways: by foretelling His coming, by revealing His role as the Messiah, and by highlighting humanity’s need for redemption. Through specific prophecies about the Messiah’s birth, life, suffering, death, and resurrection, the Old Testament prophets pointed forward to Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan.
By serving as a divine confirmation of its authority, authenticity, and purpose, prophecy leads us to the Bible. Biblical prophecies, often revealed long before their fulfillment, demonstrate God’s sovereign control over history and His plan for humanity. When these prophecies come to pass, such as the Messianic prophecies fulfilled in Jesus Christ, they validate the Bible as God’s inspired Word. Because Christ is the “heart of prophecy” (see J. Barton Payne, Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy: The Complete Guide to Scriptural Predictions and Their Fulfillment [Eugene, OR: Wipf & Stock Publishers, 2020], p. 7), His person and redemptive works are the key that unlocks all prophecy in Scripture. By revealing God’s will and pointing to Christ, prophecy thus draws people to Him as the “bright morning star” (, ESV) and to the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and hope.
- Prophecy guides us to the truth and brings comfort.
Prophecy guides us to the truth by revealing God’s divine plan, affirming His sovereignty over history, and pointing to the ultimate fulfillment of His promises. Biblical prophecies unveil truths about God’s character, His purpose for humanity, and His ultimate victory over Satan through Christ. Biblical prophecies also validate Scripture’s authority, as fulfilled prophecies confirm God’s reliability. Prophecy also illuminates God’s moral and spiritual truths, calling people to repentance and greater faith (see Louis F. Were, The Moral Purpose of Prophecy [Sarasota, FL: First Impressions, 1998]). Ultimately, prophecy brings comfort by offering hope and assurance in God’s control over the future.
- Prophecy brings unity to the church.
In , Paul writes that the church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, [with] Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone” (NKJV). This passage highlights the unity of the church by portraying it as a single structure, grounded in a shared foundation. By referring to the apostles and prophets as the church’s foundation, Paul emphasizes their unified message—God’s redemptive plan fulfilled in Christ. This standard foundation anchors all believers in the same truth, transcending cultural, social, and ethnic divisions, and promotes unity by focusing the church on the apostolic and prophetic witness that reveals God’s purposes for humanity.
Christ as the “chief cornerstone” signifies His essential role in holding the entire structure together. In ancient architecture, the cornerstone aligned, and supported, the foundation, ensuring stability. Similarly, Christ unites the church, bringing together diverse members into one spiritual household. Without Christ, the foundation would lack coherence, but, with Him, it remains solid and unified. When the prophetic message thus focuses on Christ, it brings unity to the church.
- The blessings of Ellen G. White’s prophetic ministry only come through “tasting,” or experiencing, her writings, that is, by reading and applying them.
Discuss the following seven blessings that come from reading and applying Ellen G. White’s writings. After discussing these blessings, ask the class to list other blessings they may derive from reading and applying her work to their lives.
A. Spiritual Vitality and Renewal: Reading Ellen G. White’s writings fosters deep spiritual vitality and assurance by drawing readers closer to Christ. Her works emphasize the importance of personal devotion, encouraging believers to cultivate a habit of prayer, Bible study, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Many who engage with her books, such as Steps to Christ or The Desire of Ages, find their spiritual lives rejuvenated as they gain a clearer picture of God’s love and His plan for their lives.
B. Practical Guidance for Daily Living: Beyond spiritual renewal, Ellen G. White’s writings provide practical wisdom for navigating everyday life. Her counsel covers many topics, including health, family life, education, work ethic, and character development. She presents biblical principles in a way that is both accessible and applicable, helping readers make wise decisions that align with God’s will. By following the practical insights in her writings, believers can develop more healthful lifestyles, stronger families, and a clearer sense of purpose in their daily responsibilities.
C. Prophetic Insight and a Deeper Understanding of the Cosmic Conflict Between Christ and Satan: One of the most compelling benefits of reading Ellen G. White is her prophetic insight into biblical themes, history, and end-time events. Her writings serve as a lens through which readers can gain a more profound understanding of history and Scripture, helping to clarify complex theological concepts and their relevance for today. For example, her five-book, Conflict of the Ages series offers a panoramic view of the cosmic conflict between good and evil, which will strengthen faith in God’s ultimate plan for redemption.
D. Readiness for Christ’s Return: Ellen G. White’s writings instill a sense of urgency and readiness for Christ’s second coming. She reminds believers that the Christian life is a journey of preparation, calling them to live with expectancy, faithfulness, and vigilance. She stresses that readiness for Christ is not about fear or mere external observance, but rather a deep, personal relationship with Jesus that transforms the heart. Her writings encourage believers to live purposefully, making daily choices that reflect their ultimate hope in Christ’s return.
E. Spirit of Mission and Service: Another powerful benefit of reading Ellen G. White is that her writings cultivate a passion for mission and service. She consistently calls believers to move beyond a self-centered faith and actively spread the “eternal gospel” (, ESV). Her works emphasize that true Christianity is about personal salvation and participating in God’s work to reach others. Her books, such as The Ministry of Healing and Christian Service, provide practical guidance on how to serve others effectively, whether through medical missionary work, personal evangelism, or acts of kindness. Her writings awaken a sense of responsibility to uplift humanity, inspiring believers to use their talents and resources for the glory of God.
F. Love for Scripture: Ellen G. White’s writings inspire a deep love for the Bible by consistently pointing readers back to God’s Word as the ultimate authority. She never presents her messages as a replacement for Scripture, but as a guide, to better understand and apply its truths better. Her books, such as Education and Christ’s Object Lessons, illuminate biblical themes with clarity and depth, making the Bible more accessible and engaging. She encourages daily study, urging believers to meditate on Scripture, internalize its promises, and live by its principles. Many who read her works develop a renewed enthusiasm for the Bible, finding joy in its teachings and strength in its promises.
G. Unity in the Church: Finally, Ellen G. White’s writings bring unity to the Seventh-day Adventist Church today by providing a unifying theological framework, reinforcing biblical truths, and guiding members in faith and practice. Her counsels on doctrine, lifestyle, and mission help maintain consistency across diverse cultures and perspectives, fostering a shared identity among Adventists worldwide. Her writings inspire collective purpose and spiritual cohesion by emphasizing Christ-centered living, the Cosmic Conflict theme, and the church’s mission. As a prophetic voice, she continues to serve as a point of reference for unity, encouraging faithfulness to Scripture and the church’s global mission.
